Performance / Entanglement:
Steffani Jemison and Leslie Cuyjet
on Maren Hassinger and Senga Nengudi

Artist Steffani Jemison and choreographer Leslie Cuyjet perform a collaborative piece that reflects on the dynamic artistic relationship between Maren Hassinger and Senga Nengudi. Performing alongside projections of archival images depicting Hassinger and Nengudi’s collaborations, Jemison and Cuyjet improvise together with text, dance, and thread. The performance meditates on the intense intimacy and attunement involved in longstanding artistic collaborations like Hassinger and Nengudi’s, paying homage to the powerful intergenerational legacy of their collective works.

This performance lecture was commissioned by Dia Art Foundation and presented with support from Jordan Carter, Matilde Guildi, Ellen den Elzen, Kim Golding, and Max Tannone.

A version of this text was published in Las Vegas Ikebana: Maren Hassinger and Senga Nengudi, edited by Allie Tepper.
