DEFINITIONS



Top - the highest or uppermost point, part, or surface of something.

Intrinsic / absolute top - the absolute highest possible point, part or surface of something.

Environmental top - the highest point of something relative to a certain context.

Above - In a higher place or position than something

Bottom - the lowest point of something.

Intrinsic / absolute bottom - The absolute lowest point, part or surface of something

Environmental bottom - the lowest point of something relative to a certain context.

Below - In a lower place or position than something

Front - the most forward part of something.

In front of - In a position ahead of something else.

Facing - Positioned with the face or front toward.

Back - The rear surface of something

Behind - Positioned in the back of something. Following.

Left side - The side of the body opposite the right, or the corresponding side of an object.

Left / to the left of - Next to something in the direction of the left.

Right side - The side of the body opposite the left , or the corresponding side of an object

Right / to the right of - Next to something in the direction of the right.

Beside - At the side of, next to.

Adjacent - Next to or adjoining something.

Canonical position - A fixed and permanent position [of an object] that is not affected by how things around it move.

Provisional / temporary / contingent position - A location that is not fixed, or that is in relation to other objects.

Touch - To be in physical contact with something.

Cover - To put something on top of– especially in order to protect or conceal.

Anterior - in front of something.

Posterior - to the back of something

Dorsal - the back or upper side of something. Upper is defined as in opposition to lower.

Ventral - the front or lower side of something. Lower is defined as the direction in which an object moves in relation to the earth when allowed to fall freely.

Proximal - Nearest to the self.

Distal - Further away from the self.

Circumferential - Something that surrounds.

Tangential - Deviating off from something else, not to return.

Parallel - Moving in line along side of, but never touching something else.

Orthogonal - Intersect something else at a right angle.

Cranial (toward head) - Describes how close something is to an organism’s head.  

Caudal (toward feet) - Describes how close something is to the trailing end of an organism.

Superior - Above or closer to the head.

Inferior - Below or closer to the feet.

Medial - To the center of.  Closer to the middle, towards the medial plane.

Lateral - To the sides of.
